New recruitment scam using Craigslist
targets credit unions.
(1/14/2010) The CUNA Mutual Group warns of a new membership recruitment scam that targets credit unions and members nationwide. The scam uses advertisements posted on Craigslist to solicit current credit union members and to offer $75 or more for their assistance in gaining membership for ineligible individuals.
The following are samples of Craigslist ads that target credit union members for this recruitment scam:
If your a ABC Credit Union Member
MAKE SOME EXTRA $$
This is NOT a scam! I am willing to call you and discuss extensively! I need a ABC Credit Union Member to sponsor me into the credit union. I am willing to pay $100 USD for this service. Please email me and we can discuss this in detail. This is a 1 day process and I want to become a member for investment account/interest rate purposes.
Need to find a XYZ Credit Union Member:
I was just approved for a visa credit card with XYZ Federal Credit Union and they called me and said that they can not process the application if I do not know any existing member or if I am not employed at one of the list of companies they have. To become a member you have to know a member. So now my app is on hold until I can find someone who is already a member. If you know someone, please tell them to contact me. I am willing to pay $500. And all they ask for is the members name and member number. Thanks.
ABC and XYZ Members Needed!!!
If you are a ABC or XYZ Federal Credit Union member we will pay you $75.00 per member to sponsor other that would like to join the credit union but do not meet the membership requirements. Please email for details.
Rest assured Travis Credit Union has the necessary controls in place to catch and thwart those who attempt to gain fraudulent membership or open new accounts with us. Our safeguards include:
Exercising extra due diligence when opening accounts via in person, online, fax or mail to ensure individuals are eligible for membership.
Verifying all information provided for new account applications, including addresses, employment and eligibility for membership.
Obtaining credit reports and investigating negative information.
Fraudulent Text Message Warning
We received a report of a fraudulent text message spam asking the recipient to call a (408) number in order to reactivate their frozen bank account. The attempt was to capture Credit Card number, expiration date and PIN. This number has been disconnected.
Do not call any unsolicited numbers and supply any information regarding your credit union account. If you have already provided information about your CAHPCU account(s) using this fraudulent recording, please let us know at 1.800.542.2247 1.800.542.2247 .
Phishing Scams More Prevalent
Phishing is the act of tricking someone into giving them confidential information or tricking them into doing something that they normally wouldn't do or shouldn't do. For example: sending an e-mail to a user falsely claiming to be an established legitimate enterprise in an attempt to scam the user into surrendering private information that will be used for identity theft.

To counteract this growing problem, please be aware that Cooperative Center Federal Credit Union will no longer include e-mail links in our electronic correspondence (e-mail). For convenience, please be sure to bookmark our home banking website in your Favorites Menu.
What You Can Do
To protect yourself against phishing scams, never reveal private or account information online by responding through a link in an e-mail.
